Head of CIS Anti-Terrorism Center honors contribution of Elena Sutormina to fight against international terrorism

On December 24, at the CIS Antiterrorist Center HQ, Chairwoman of the CCRF Commission on Development of Public Diplomacy and Support of Russian Compatriots Abroad was awarded with a testimonial on behalf of Center Director Andrei Novikov for her great contribution to strengthening of coordination and cooperation between CIS governmental agencies in the fight against international terrorism.

Let’s recall that Elena Sutormina initiated a number of events on the issue of recruitment to the ISIS terrorist organization held at the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation. The issue-specific hotline to counter recruiters was launched in the CCRF on August 1, 2015.

"Several dozens of calls have been registered at the hotline during the period of its operation. Basically, people are reporting about terrorists’ attempts to recruit their relatives; also, some messages came from those people whose recruited relatives already left the territory of Russia,” Elena Sutormina said, adding that calls still continue to come.

"We carefully scrutinize each case, engaging psychologists and other specialist to our work and forwarding registered cases to the Interior Ministry FSB whenever necessary."

In addition, Elena Sutormina initiated publication of infographics that describes what the ISIS is, what countries it embraces, what recruitment methods it applies, as well as "The ISIS Horror Tale" brochure focusing on the question of how to determine that a child got interested in Islamist ideology and telling real-life stories of people who once fell under the influence of extremist movements, but managed to escape.

Guidelines and the brochure will soon be supplied to schools and universities in Russia and CIS countries.
